Welcome to the weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts around the world.
If you missed it last week - TPT (KTCA 2) in St. Paul, MN has dropped Doctor Who from its schedule. Over the air viewers are out of luck for Doctor Who on TV unless they live in a fringe area that pulls in either KAWE/KAWB or one of the Iowa Public TV transmitters. Satellite subscribers on DirecTV are out of luck. Satellite subscribers on Dish Network are currently out of luck, but KAWE 9 is listed as a possible future local channel for the Minneapolis locals, so maybe you'll get Who back in the future, but no idea when.
We finally have some word as to what Uniseries http://www.uniseries.com.ar/ is doing with Doctor Who. One of our readers has gotten word that Uniseries is airing the 4th season of Tom Baker's episodes (1977-1978, The Doctor, Leela, and the original K9). The episodes are airing in English with Spanish subtitles. It's still unknown precisely which episodes are airing which week. Uniseries is seen in South America.
WQED/WQEX 13,16 http://www.wqed.org/ Pittsburgh, PA has apparently launched its digital channel - WQED-DT 38, according to http://www.100000watts.com/ . 100000watts.com is reliable most of the time, but WQED's website makes no mention of their digital plans, so we don't know for sure if the station is airing or what WQED is doing with the station. All of the current US Doctor Who affiliates are noncommercial stations, and by current rules they must have their digital stations on the air by May 1, 2003, or else. Commercial stations had to be on the air by May 1, 2002, and most did not, and extensions were generally granted, so who knows if the rule will be strictly enforced for noncommercial stations.
WYBE Philadelphia, PA http://www.wybe.org/ mentions on their website that they will dedicate their digital signal on Friday, November 8, implying that November is the month when WYBE-DT 34 will go on air.
WCET 48 Cincinnati, OH http://www.wcet.org/ is back at full power after being on low power since June. While at reduced power, they made a lot of progress on their digital signal, and hope to have it on air soon.
Bad news for KTEH viewers who subscribe to Dish Network in the San Francisco area. Dish Network moved the device that receives the local signals to send them to the satellite. In the past, Dish could send them an adequate signal over the air. Now, the signal doesn't reach the relevant device. As a result, KTEH is off of Dish Network till further notice. KTEH provides its signal to DirecTV via a fiber feed because its over the air signal never could reach DirecTV's device. But they do not have money budgeted in to provide fiber to Dish Network at this time. Although Dish moved their device, the relevant must-carry rules indicate that it is the station's job to provide an adequate signal to the satellite provider. If the situation changes, we'll report. There are several Doctor Who affiliates that probably qualify for must-carry satellite status in various cities if they could get their signal to DirecTV or Dish's uplink locations.
While I try to keep the column up to date, I do sometimes miss late changes to schedules. If you see TWIDW's information getting out of synch with what your local station is actually airing, let me know ASAP.
